    Think of it like this.. If you need to brake hard then you are bleeding off all the energy you used to get going.. It is impossible to not waste energy unless you roll to a stop without ever using your brakes. Accelerate just enough to get going and not be a hazard to drivers around you..
    definitely. Vinny has some good points. start slowly and when you see a red light about half a block ahead take your foot off the gas and coast up preparing to stop. if it turns green in the meantime, then you've saved on gas by coasting. (DON'T TAKE CAR OUT OF GEAR TO COAST) when it's clear you can accelerate.
