I can't say I'm surprised that a steel watch just north of $20K amounts to link the cheapest way to get a new AP on your wrist. The rub, of course, is that purchasing a Royal Oak at retail is link just not a given these days, and short of fantastic luck or an established relationship with a local link boutique or AP House, many folks end up paying the market price. For a watch of this type, I'd expect that to be around double retail.
