Wow, that's a lot of questions in one sentence.
They live long enough to smack your windshield, they are usually mating when flying.
Yes the 'innards' splattered on your paint is acidic and should be removed immediately-- Some people in the south I understand put 'cling-wrap' on the front of their car when these bugs are in flight, get to a rest stop and peel it off and place another one on the front of the car. Do not put cling wrap on your windshield though, it will distort your view.
I don't know how long they have been in existence however, I would surmise longer than we have.. Over 4.5 million years..
I don't believe they carry any diseases.
