The Taliban was the government of Afghanistan (Now a rebel group trying to regain power.) They originally overthrew a number of warlords that ran Afghanistan after the fall of the communist regime.

Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization. It's a network of  training camps and religious schools that train young men into military warfare, terrorism, and give them extremist islamic education. The Al-Qaeda network was also based in Afghanistan, they were guests of the warlords and later, Taliban.
