Have you ever seen a flying squirrel? I just saw one in my backyard.

He "flew" from one tree to the other. He's made a home in one of the birdhouses I have up. This picture is from the internet. I'm hoping if I keep my camera with me, I can get a picture of the one in my backyard. He looks like the one in this picture. I've never seen one in real life before. Cute little guy :)

They don't really fly like birds. They glide. They jump from a higher tree and can glide for about 295 feet to reach another tree. Watch this video http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=how+far+can+a+flying+squirrel+glide&view=detail&mid=AB49C768CE061C6B7350AB49C768CE061C6B7350&first=0&FORM=LKVR2

Wow, lucky you, I thought they lived in the wild. You are lucky to see one. My Mom has an albino squirrel in her yard. First one of those I've ever seen too.

I've never seen an albino squirrel. I've seen the common greys of course, a few black ones and an occasional red one. Never knew there was an albino. Now I want to see one! :)

Thats cool. Our little town use to have squirrels, but the mexicans made soup out of them.

I'm so glad to have something not often seen living in my backyard. I love nature :) I got just as excited when the owls were here. It's fun! I hope someday you get to see a glider possum!

We have a family of the regular possums living in a tree beside our house. They are cute & all that but also a bloody nuisance at times. They are nocturnal & when they gallop across our roof at 3 am I could strangle them.

I get a lot of possums through my backyard. Thankfully they do not stay. I'd hate for one of my little dogs to tangle with one. A possum could tear them up :(

My grandfather kept hearing a clinking noise in his kitchen last week. He went into the kitchen to see what it was and found a baby opposum in his sink. I was all excited and told him I wanted to see it. Then he imformed me he beat it over the head with a frying pan. I was mortified- I couldn't believe he did this! He said they have very sharp teeth and carry rabies.

That's a very sad story and shame on grandpa. There was a better way :(

I really loved the sqirrels when I was in the US.They seemed so game, hardly frightened of us at all.& very acrobatic.

I love watching the babies play with each other. They run and attack and tumble with each and even play hide and seek. Too funny to see one sneak up on the other and POUNCE! LOL

LOL awesome!!!! We had one come in through the fireplace when I lived in New Hampshire... It scared the mess out of everyone.... I think my mom washed her hair 30 times that night... I just want to play with the vicious little thing.
