The most common form of tuberculosis of the skin is lupus vulgaris. Any part of the skin surface may be attacked; but the face, particularly the nose, is the most common area. This disease most often attacks children, but it may persist until they are mature or even middle-aged. It is characterized by small, soft tubercles resembling apple butter. These slowly increase in number and spread by the addition of new ones around the edges. The tubercles tend to ulcerate and then to heal with scarring, leading to considerable disfigurement and distress.
There is no specific cure for lupus vulgaris. Antibacterial medication is helpful. X ray, radium, sunlight, other lights, cautery, and other forms of treatment have been tried with fair success; but, as a rule, the treatment must be continued for a long time.
