Depends upon the size of the pump, and the volume of water to be pumped.  Typically, one is enough, especially if there is a sump cut into floor, which collects water in a puddle, and if it has an automatic float/switch.  This enables it to sense when water is present and come on before problem gets too deep, then shut off automatically, without burning out the pump.  Good luck!
