You will notice that there is a series of approximately 6 letters & sometimes two sets of approximately 6 letters. They want you to enter the numbers or words that are displayed prior to being able to log in. The reason for the characters is simply put to prove that you are human.

There are many automated programs that may be trying to log into your email account. So it is a more secure site as they have added additional security,

An automated program cannot decipher the characters thus you have proven to them that you are human not an automated program. If you have trouble reading the characters it is because sometimes the characters are difficult to view. There is an option that you can refresh the characters until you see one that you can decipher. Just keep on refreshing until you give them the correct answer.
