The above article describes growing globe artichokes, but there is another vegetable also called the artichoke. This is a tuber resembling a mis-shapen potato which is easily grown simply by planting an existing tuber. They grow very easily and can be a problem to get rid of.
I have just found that they are called sunchokes in the US ( Helianthus tuberosus Lat.). Otherwise called topinambours (Fr) or Jerusalem artichokes.
