The variables in your open-ended question are nearly infinite.  You have perspectives on an individual basis, a couple basis, family, sibling, city, state, nation, farmer, lawyer, ethnic background, student, educator.....

There are so many "societies" and you want me to come up with some definitive answer for what appears to be a college exam question.  

DEPENDS would be my answer.  Depends on the society, sub-society, or even sub-sub society.  

You asked this question 3 years ago.  If I put my full effort into an answer, I'd still be adding to it 3 years from now.
