About 20 years ago I installed a solar water heater on my house in the UK. It cost about £3,000 so I although it supplied all my needs for about 4 monthsof the year I doubt if it has paid for itself yet.
I am shortly to move to a new house where I am installing a heat pump water heater, This should pay for itself in about 10 years if what I am told is correct. Here we get tax breaks for green installations like the above, wood-burners, rainwater storage, photovoltaics.
