Kindergarten was started in Germany . It literally means , '' A Garden of Children " It was designed to get kids ready for school, kinda like pre-school. Now days, Kindergarten is like 1st grade used to be. They're taught how to print the whole alphabet; and some other pre-reading skills.
Dr. Maria Montessori ( in Italy ) improved on pre-school by putting in the room--- water ponds on tables, and sand tables, etc. Her theory was that kids should move around and explore and go to the sites to play that kids naturally gravitate too.......such as sand and water, and blocks, etc. She said kids will teach themselves to some extent, and teach eachother.
