The United Kingdom may be spending the first few days of its summer holiday season in a state of shock at the speed and scale of rioting and looting in London and other major cities such as Liverpool, Bristol, and Birmingham. Leading politicians have returned early from family holidays, Parliament has been recalled, and more than 16,000 policemen will be out on London streets on Wednesday. The trigger for the current rioting may have been the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan, aged 29, when police stopped the car carrying him in Tottenham area, one of London's poorest neighbourhoods, on the night of August 4. The following day events went out of control at the end of a peaceful gathering by Mr. Duggan's family outside a local police station — and within hours, rioters were on the rampage. Since then, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets have been used to specify meeting points for more violence and looting across London and elsewhere. Chain stores have been targeted, but so have local shops and businesses of long standing and good reputation, in what amount to bouts of consumerist looting. There is growing public anger against the failure of the police to act effectively and in time, and even calls for vigilantism.

We all pray that  it ends well.

There is no justification for this act of violence regardless of who shot who for what. To imply this is paybacks for police shooting a suspected drug dealer, is absurd and feeds into the mob mentality. Courts determined guilt or innocence, not mob rule or popular opinion.

Your cops should be armed. This couldn't happen where I live. Everyone is armed to the teeth. The streets would be running red with looters blood.

Your Bobbies' I understand do not carry guns.. maybe this is the time to reconsider this.. Not that they should shoot every idiot on the streets but perhaps it might  put the fear in them that they can shoot back if needed..  I wish all the luck there, I would love to visit London one day, I hope the thugs don't ruin such a wonderful place with such a wonderful history for the rest of us that have never seen it..

Remember, this all started because the police did shoot someone.

Oh--- I guess i need to read into it more.. Still there is no respect for police anywhere i guess. I don't know this incident but it sounds like the one we had here with the police shooting of a trouble maker near a train station. We lost four cops a cuple years ago when thugs shot and killed them.. not much pity there..

Well, I have to say, the police sort of did it to themselves when they stopped respecting the people they swore to protect and sold out to the mob. People are just giving back the same disrespect they get. (In this country anyway).

I grew up in a different time, a time when we all respected police officers, admittedly the police of eons ago are different than today. I believe one reason is frustration, they haven't the authority they once had.. There is nothing wrong with being afraid of a cop if you are doing wrong, today, there is no fear of cops because of crooked lawyers that will go after a police dept for a cop doing what he is s'posed to do. This in turn led to many good policemen leaving and then new ones coming in on a power trip, this catch 22 feeds on itself and then you have corrupt cops everywhere. I know this probably doesn't make sense to you but there is a pattern here.

these low life looters are just using the excuse of a kiling by the police to act like hooligans, rubber bullets would be justified.
