Rust. There are many potential undiscovered life forms that clearly demonstrate the appearance of life like responses but does not reproduce under observation. These are deemed to be chemical reactions. Its easy to think of some reactions as being brought about by some undiscovered microbe as rust was so considered even well into the 1950s. About that time I wrote a story about Ghost Ants...completely transparent and only observable by the vanishing food particles (fiction).
