      From their beginning in 1859, the Indian Head penny did not have any mint marks at all until 1908 and 1909 when the mint mark for San Francisco, California, "S", was placed on the reverse [tails] side of the coin beneath the wreath for the coins minted there.

        The Indian Pennies produced at the San Francisco mint have an "S"mint mark. The coins minted in Philidelphia however DO NOT have any identifying mint marks. An Indian Head Penny with an "S' mark is somewhat scarce, hence, they are more valuable the other Indian Head cents
