Its just over the years that sediment has built up in the tank. Hook a hose to the drain outlet of the water heater and flush the system. You will see a lot of "dirt" come out turn it off when it runs clear you should do this at least once a year. It helps the tank last longer, run more efficient, and water heat faster! Also do the same if you have electric, or oil. Sediment builds up in all tanks.
