President Buchanan had pretty much set the north and south at each others throats when he tried to get them to settle the issues of division without war. He kinda mismanaged the whole thing when he tried hard to impose peace on the sharply divided partisans. The civil war truly started when Lincoln was elected President. Not many people liked him, north or south, but the south especially did not like him.
