Installing a compass on a watch link seems easy until you remember a compass is just a magnet on a free-floating pivot and magnets don't play well with watch movements. A compass near the movement, let alone underneath it, would magnetize link internal parts like the link main and balance springs, making them highly inaccurate or non-working.
