I think at about 7. But, it depends on how it's explained to him/ her. When I was almost 4, I couldn't figure out where my grandma went to when she died, b/c she never left our house. My parents didn't explain it to me right away, but my mom tried throughout that year . First she said Grandma went to heaven , and then they took me to the funeral home and there she was ! What was she doing there, asleep in the coffin, if Mama said Grandma went to heaven ? Mama said Grandma wasn't asleep, that it was different, but I remember saying, Well , she LOOKS like she's asleep !! I didn't get it till later on. But when it sunk in that I wasn't going to see Grandma anymore, I cried at night and felt that grief for years.
