Try chopping the food into really small pieces and then put it between some waxed paper, parchment paper or plastic wrap.  Close the food up tight and wail the day lights out of it with a rolling pin or bang with an iron skillet.

We cooked a long, long time without blenders or food processors and did very well.  You said the recipe said to "pulse twice" so it is not supposed to be a mush. Just in small pieces

    Good Luck

a blender would do the same!
