      I remember that my mom did that just once was enough she did not hurt just enough to show me who was the boss.

          We had to do the same thing. If we didn't bring a proper size stick/switch, that meant my father could go choose the size. You brought the proper size.

                I warned them, they did it again, never came back. Neither did some other friends. So yes, there was a choice.
