         The "MPN" stands for "most probable number".  This refers to the number of microorgainisms contained in a certain dilution or weight of sample.  In this case, it means there are less than .3 staphylococcus per gram.  From what I can ascertain, it looks to me like this method would be used in evaluating the bacterial population of soil, water, and agricultural products, as well as for testing indicator organisms like E. coli in the food industry.
