South Sudan formally became an independent state on July 9, 2011 following the self-determination’s referendum in January this year that resulted to overwhelming vote for secession from the rest of Sudan after 55 years of armed struggle (SOUTHERNERS STRUGGLE).

The referendum was provided for in the peace accord that ended the war between the governoment of Sudan and Sudan People's Liberation Movement or Sudan People's Liberation Army North in 2005 in Nirobi Kenya.
