The shuttles thrusters are not powerful enough for takeoff, the thrusters help the main boosters reach speeds to break gravitational pull, other than that, they are used for attitude corrections and slowing decent.

"Space (shuttle)s need to be attached to a main rocket booster with 2,more smaller boosters on either side,for thrust & boost so that it may be capable of leaving the (Earth) atmosphere & becoming space-orbital." The (shuttles) circumnavigate at a speed of 17,000 m.p.h. "(This is all conjecture of course)."
