A biofilm is a sticky, layered community of bacteria that can build up on something over time. It can form on an in-dwelling catheter in a person's body. This poses a risk of infection to the patient, because bacteria cells can break off and enter the person's bloodstream. The bacteria in the biofilm can also be resistant to antibiotics, because the drugs are unable to get to the bacteria and kill them. Another type os biofilm is plaque on teeth.
