In today's time is it realistic to want a happy life with someone instead of what may be practical or sensible?

Why should it be any different now than any other time? People are still allowed to make mistakes in their lives. Sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't. All you have to do is move on if it doesn't, you still have a life ahead of you. Just one rule to follow, don't hurt anybody in the process (including yourself), always be kind to the other person even when it's time to leave (if you have to).

This is a very good and genuine question.  People from every generation look for happy lives with their partners.  Young people today face more challenges such as jobs, money, taxes, and TV programs showing lots of sex. It's harder to feel satisfied.  Happiness is relative: your expectation regarding life with your partner vs. the actual outcome.  Remember, perception defines reality.

You have your goals in life.  You must set goals with your partner because it's now a joint partnership.  I find that, if it's a joint goal, chances are that the two people will not blame the other when the objective(s) do not get attained.  Think of "we" instead of "I".  You have a very good chance in your life as I don't see the word "I" in your question.
