What would Shakespeare have meant by the word "prevent". How is it different from today? What part of the dictionary would you find it?

In the 1600s, "prevent" could also mean "come before," as in this excerpt from the KJV Bible (published in 1611, five years before Shakespeare died).

"...we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For....the dead in Christ shall rise first."
1 Thes. 4:15
