Simplification of the difference quotient for the function f(x) = 2x - 1:
Calculation of f(x+h): f(x+h) = 2(x+h) + 1 = 2x + 2h +1.
Substitution of f(x + h) and f(x) in the definition of the difference quotient by their expressions:
[ f (x + h) – f(x) ] / h = [2x + 2h + 1 - (2x - 1)] / h. Now you need to finish the rest of the calculation, and that's it.
