there are 27 sq. in one sq. yd. one sq. ft.= 12"x12"x12"=1,728 cu. in. To calculate one cu. yd. there are 3 lin. ft. in one lin. yd. So one cobic yard = WxHxD whitch = ( 3'x 3'x 3' ) = 27 cu. ft. = one cubic yard. W = width, H = hight, D = depth. you are working with square cube not just a square.
