Why is cinco de mayo celebrated in a latin culture?

It is Mexico's Independence Day from Spainish (as in Spain) rule... As far as why it is made a big to-do in the USA, I am not sure except for the sheer ridiculous way society is today and the unaddressed issue of how California is being silently taken back over by the neighbors to the south of this country!!
