Are fireplace, wood stove inserts practical? Will they make the room TOO hot?

Yes they are very practical compared to a fireplace. You will be able to control the heat more than a fireplace, and yes they are hotter than a fireplace if left unchecked. A fan in the room to distribute heat works well.
