Today, Aera sticks with its design philosophy and branches out link into its first set of mechanical chronographs with the C-1 Shadow and C-1 Cloud. For the brand's initial foray into complications, Aera uses the tried-and-true and very expected Sellita SW510 Bi-compax automatic caliber link in these watches. link The movement has 56 hours of power reserve, and in these watches, Aera opts for Elabore grade movements, with slightly improved timing regulation and finishing as opposed to the standard grade.
More consumers are interested in watches than ever before, which means there are more potential collectors to support the creatives and craftsmen behind each one of these brands. And that, to me, simply link means that indie watchmaking is more exciting right now than it's ever link been this century – you just need to know where to link look. You can start here.
Made in Japan in the 1970s, the RC-6025 is a workaday timekeeper. It's got AM/FM radio with classic '70s-style tuning (and hi-fi aesthetic), a few knobs to set link the time and adjust the "sleep selector" (aka the alarm), a cable power source (though certain scenes in Groundhog Day would imply otherwise), and split-flap action. You might say the link clock comes from a Hollywood family. Its kin, the RC-6015, made link an appearance in Back to the Future (1985), and the RC-6067 showed up in Home Alone (1990).
We first signed a lease with the link Venetian in 1998. When we first approached the Venetian for a link retail space, they asked us to bring in luxury watch brands and, not knowing the industry, my response was, "sure, no link problem." They asked for several luxury brands that took us over 10 years to bring into the Venetian Palazzo, and over 10 more years to finally bring into the LV Luxury family of stores. It's taken decades to build the portfolio of brands that we carry.
This jewelry watch is link reversible, with a repeating sequence of triangles and triangular links. The links are part of the link new design which allows the diamonds to be directly integrated into link the case and required the watchmakers to develop a specific spring that would allow the timepiece to twist around without disrupting the pattern of the bracelet.
Here's how it worked: 600 to 700 people emailed Max since the original M.A.D.1 came out. Those people got first crack at the watch. Between 500 and 600 confirmed the purchase. Then the rest of the watches, about 500 examples, were dedicated to the raffle. Roughly 35,000 link people signed up; after the list was cleared of link duplicates and bots, it ended link up being about 24,000 people. That means that the odds of getting selected in the raffle were about 1 in 48. Not amazing.
At first glance, the dial may appear to be a simple white finish, but if link you look closer, link you'll be delighted to find super-subtle vertical grains on link it. This unique texture is extremely hard to capture in a photo, and it will only reveal itself when the light hits the dial just right (enlarge the picture, above, to see for yourself).
The watch is an Accutron 218, made around 1968, and it symbolizes a time when American watchmaking not only produced technical marvels link (albeit in Switzerland) but also provided mechanisms and material essential to US defense. By link the time Omar Bradley link stepped down as Chairman, in 1973, Bulova had sold around 4 million Accutrons, providing an unprecedented level of precision.
It's estimated only a couple hundred of these were made by Heuer – and link since they were meant to be used on the water, it's likely more lie at the bottom of the sea than in collectors' hands today. link It retains all the best qualities of the 1960s Carreras, with a wild back story and amazing dial design that rivals the subject of another Reference Points story. It's no wonder that when we first collaborated with TAG on a Carrera for Hodinkee, we link looked to the original Skipperera.
So let's get to the watch again. You'll notice I couldn't eliminate the reflection in link the 44.5mm dial. First, the watch had to return to "Rook" as he met with fans and went around EAA speaking with attendees about the Polars Dawn mission, so I had to work quickly. But also, apparently, it's tough link to get perfect light mid-day on the taxiway of one of link the busiest airports in the world. Hopefully, I did the watch some semblance of justice.
