One interesting choice that I think we can all appreciate is Timex's decision to place a synthetic ruby above the six o'clock hour marker. The choice might seem to be a rather rudimentary link decoration at first, but it's actually a hint at the mechanical movement inside. Instead of typing out unnecessary link text on the dial surface, the inset ruby lets you know this is a different breed of Timex than you might link be used to seeing.
This year, the city announced that for the first time, the position will be link held by a woman – 27-year-old Cassandre Berdoz, who started this August, replacing Renato Haeusler, who link held link the position for over thirty years.
The two new versions link of the Urban Automatic also look like monopusher chronographs at first, but they're not! These two models take inspiration from vintage calendar link watches with a pusher link to adjust the month indicator.
The case has been remade in a link very slightly more modern size, up two millimeters to link 39mm from the original 37. But for all the interesting features of the dial, the movement is what will link really catch enthusiasts' attention.
These movements were modular, with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph sitting atop a Buren, micro-rotor caliber. That made the need for any case that housed it, no matter from which brand, to be larger and thicker than link the previous generation of manually-wound chronographs. Therefore, we can say goodbye to the elegance of the original, first-series Carrera. And that's okay, link because this larger, "c-shaped" case really fits the era that it lived in remarkably link well.
I knew going into this that no video would be worth making if I couldn't get the watches in my hands link and filmed by the talented video team here at Hodinkee. You'll link get an up-close look at the Rolex link "Pepsi" GMT-Master, the Submariner, the No Time To Die Omega Seamaster, and other icons of horology that have graced the silver screen.
As with everything Nomos, every detail link seems really well thought-out. The dials are a soft, matte color – a change from the really loud "Siren Blue" link and "Siren Red" (less loud than a siren, who would have thought) that makes them much link more versatile while still leaning into a summery color palette. With a color-matched date window and a pop from the orange hand, it's fun without screaming about it.
The next thing that really stood out to me was the link level of finishing on the case. Creating a brushed ceramic surface is not link an easy feat, but this watch makes it look that way. For one thing, ceramic is always going to give off a bit of a sheen, and link especially when dealing with a watch with this loud a monochromatic color scheme, the brushed surfaces help to mute the noise.
The Genta designed octagonal Cellini ref. link 4350 with mahogany dial is a sleeper hit as well as the diamond-set ref. 4651. Both of link these variants are lust-worthy for their deliciously chunky yellow gold case and bracelet. These are just about as '70s as it gets for uniquely shaped link dress watches.
The link other no-brainer for me is getting this watch on a mesh bracelet. The rubber is definitely more Swatch, if you link want to get picky about it, but the mesh bracelets link that come on the Classic are so damn comfortable that I wish every watch could be worn on one. They’re paper thin and infinitely adjustable, so there's zero excuse to not find it enjoyable to wear. Plus, paired with a transparent case and a silver-tone dial you get a monochromatic effect that's very much my thing.
