If you do not want to use the vet recommended products which are all over the internet, try stringing a set of eucalyptus nuts in a double row sewn into a cheesecloth tube around his neck.  It was effective for the pioneers.  Do this before you flea bomb your home twice, about 60-70 days apart to kill the fleas and their next generation so he doesn't bring them back inside.  Also wash his dog bed frequently at least once a month.
