its probably becsuse you didnt set a homepage...
to set onw you need to find one you would want it to be and than go to options and "make this page my hompage"

whenever you send or get an email you need to put\click on the E-Mail addres and there will be an option to add the contact,
for editing you must access an exsisting contact and click on edit... 

unnfortunately im pretty sure that unless it ase been less than a year you cant re open it,
if it was less than a year than whenever you closed it you must have gotten an email from hotmail saying that incase you would like to re open it you need to press a link (it will all be in that mail)
but if more than a year has past the link is not longer valid 

i dont know wich browser you r using but the way to get it back is very simple, all you have to do is right clck on the same line as your back and forward buttons and you will have the option to choose wich bars you want see so you will have to make sure that the favorite bar is marked
