Jock itch refers to any infection of the groin area. It's associated with sweating and friction; risk factors inclide heat, humidity, excessive sweating, and tight clothing.
Jock itch can be caused by 3 types of microorganisms: bacteria, yeast (Candida albicans, most common in diabetics), and fungi (Epidermatophton floccosum and Trichophyton, which are the same fungi that cause ahtlete's foot).
To relieve the pain and itch, try a 1% hydrocortisone cream for 3-4 days. To get rid of the microbe causing the infection, you need a prescription antibiotic cream for bacteria. For the fungi that also cause athlete's foot, use Tinactin, Cruex, or Desenex. To cover these fungi and possible Candida albicans, use Lotrimin, Micatin, or Monistat Derm. It'll take 2-4 weeks for these to clear the infection.
