Hi Guys, i just got back from having the best, interesting 14 days of my life, 14 days in the Peoples Republic of China.

The Chinese are the most courteous, helpful, respectful people i have ever come across, the scenery and the history unbelievable, Did the usual tourists things, The Great Wall, Forbidden City and the most amazing sight of all The Terracotta Warriors. What is strange a Communist Country embracing Capitalism, i have never seen so many top of the range cars in one country before, if you want a holiday with a difference, China the place to go.

how did you communicate with them ?
    bulletman

mycatsmom, i used body gestures, like hopping like a kangaroo to be Australian, that certainly got a lot of laughs, or using pictures in Macca's to order a hamburger meal, it was a lot of fun, with a little patience you can communicate. :)

We'll go for a tournament and sightseeing, hector

I image that it would be a very interesting place for sure. The one negative thing that I was told about China (by a Canadian couple) and actually saw it as well in a documentary, is that everyone smokes everywhere and anywhere....restaurants, movie theaters, public offices and none of the locals seem to be concerned. Since smoking in public places has been banned here in Canada for years, they were not used to that and didn't appreciate the "bad air". Otherwise, they said the same as you did, about the people and the scenery being fantastic.

They said they'll return once the Chinese hear about smoking being bad for your health.                   :)

Ducky, i'm a smoker and i could not smoke in most places , the same as Australia and the UK, i even had my private balcony on the cruise ship for a smoke. Smoking is the last of their worries , it is the unseen pollution every where on this planet. --- i did notice not many young Chinese smoking --- before any one asks i am not a Communist. :)

It was about three years ago, that this couple was there. Perhaps there has been a DRASTIC change in this time period. Wow. Smoking is still part of pollution...still causes lung cancer and many other illnesses. Global pollution cannot be used by smokers as an excuse to continue, can it? That is where many smokers go when anyone suggests that they might want to quit. ("I'm breathing in pollution anyway. Or....I have to die from something.")
    P.S. I never considered that you might be a Communist.....just a smoker. :)

It's okay BM. I get it. It's nice to be able to voice an opinion these days without the name calling, isn't it....Communist, Cool-aid Drinker, Fanatic, Homophobe, Stupid, etc. :)

Ducky, what is a 'cool-aid drinker', thats a new one to me?

@BM...Surprised that you missed that often used (by one here on aka) as a slam against Christians. Years ago, a man by the name of Jim Jones gathered "his followers" and encouraged them to believe that it was time to commit suicide "for God". Sadly, hundreds died at a commune in Guyana after being told to drink a cool-aid mixture, especially prepared for "this godly group of followers". He had pretended to be a Christian but based on his actions, was obviously not.

@mcm....Yes, I forgot about sheeple (again a reference to "stupid followers".)

Thanks Ducky for the explanation, remember seeing it on the news many moons ago, another case of mass murder, the children certainly did not have a choice - it was sad.

    Very, very sad for sure.

My neice  went on a sponsored cycle ride for 5 days through China , she said the same about the people.  She bought back some fantastic photos and a dvd that someone filmed  of them , the countryside was amazing too.

My cousin's grand daughter was just there for a whole college semester !  She loved it ! She even studied Mandarin  in college before she went.

You are an awesome Aussie! Glad you had such a nice time and a wonderful experience. Experiencing another culture is a beautiful thing.

    bulletman

It certainly a different culture, witchway, i hav'nt seen u on Aka for ages, where have you been? I plan to do as much travelling as i can in retirement.

My husband was rushed to the hospital last August. Colon cancer. A bowel resection and six months of chemo has kept us very busy. He also started dialysis while he was in hospital and of course continues to dialize three times a week. He is starting to get back on his feet and his strength is coming back slowly. I am the caregiver and that's why I've not be present on this site much. Thanks for missing this Mrs., I appreciate it. Enjoy your retirement and travel on my friend, for this is an extraordinary world.
    mycatsmom

witchway, sorry you and he are going thru this. I went thru that with my husb. When someone in the family has cancer, it's like the whole family has cancer. We are your family too, Witchway.
    witchway

Thanks MCM. This is not the first time for the family. My daughter had bone cancer when she was 16. That lasted for six years. Day by day. :)
    bulletman

So sorry Witchway, did not mean to pry, all the very best to your husband on his recovery, :)
    witchway

Thanks bulletman. No need to apologize. We are doing just fine. So far all tests show he is clear. Day by day! :)

My daughter, son in law & grand daughter lived there for 3 years. They had many stories to tell. They also had the kitchen made for the house I was building for them while they were there.Very surprising quality. It's a very large complicated kitchen but it all went together without a hitch.

G'day Tom, a real handy man, wish i was, it is funny that if i mention i went to China they ask what for, or they know someone who has been there, there's seems to me a people are wary of the country, i felt safer there than all the places i have been too, what did you think of the Antarctic cold snap we just had and all that snow, Cheers mate, Kent. :)

Soooo glad you had a memorable vacation, Kent, and knew you'd be impressed with everything. So much history and tradition....

(My mom went twice; said it was her favorite trip and she traveled extensively)
