Modern medicine has advanced so much in a few decades that more and more women in their 40s & 50s are having children now. Always best to check with the appropriate medical professional for your individual case.

    that's a happy story and a good example of this subject, J D .

Yes, it's safe if the woman is in good general heath. And if she doesn't drink or smoke.......but that's true of any pregnancy .

My grandma was 43 when she had her 1st and only baby and he turned out alright. Her husband died 6 mos. later of kidney disease   :-(

Lots of women celebrities have had babies over 40 in the last 10 or 20 years.

What does drinking and smoking have to do with the ability to get pregnant?

I t means the baby can have a healthy gestation and greater chances to be born healthy if the mother doesn't smoke or drink or take drugs during pregnancy. Now, the medical literature says that even if the preg mother drinks even a little bit, it could make the child have learning disabilities.

True that but, a woman with such habits can still get pregnant. What she does after makes the difference

Read the papers and tabloids. Women past child baring years are carrying babies (implanted) all the time now days. The odds of the baby having birth defects is greater as a woman ages......

May be possible, but is it fair to the child?  Think about a 65+ yr. old tossing the football with a young teen.  And the brighter side is, maybe parents and babies could share one box of diapers!!!

My dad was about 43 when I was born. Doing child oriented activities wasn't his cup of tea.

    LOL, Bustie

A lot of things have to go correctly for a child to be born without complications. Physically and genetically. It is true the older a woman is , and also the man is , decreases the chances of a normal conception and development , IF you are made to have children at late age. If you have the money, seek out a genetic consultant to test you both.

sweetkandy - what do you mean by "safe". There is no reason why this is not possible and I am sure you are aware of the risks to the unborn child and will be responsible i.e. alcohol, cigarettes etc. Of course it is OK go ahead - just be responsible. Forget all this genetic stuff - this can apply to younger parents Too! Nowadays they have technologies which can detect Down's Syndrome and maybe other defects prior to baby being born and obviously genetics if known would have to be checked as to their possibility of passing this to the unborn child.   I guess as Clu says - finances come into it but where do they not - You can manage I am sure - there are many famous, talented and intelligent people who come from poor backgrounds.

I think I would worry about financial cocerns. Putting a kid thru college is quite expensive! If you are 50 at birth you will be close to 70 when college starts. No retirement for you unless of course you have lots of money.
