If you live in Canada and want a job (some kind of a job) in order to pay for food, clothing and shelter, you do have some options. You won't get rich but you CAN go to work every day and collect a pay check. Try places like Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Call Centers, McDonalds, etc. who all hire lots of people over the age of 50. However, that could mean making $10.00/hour instead of $30.00/hr. Sometimes you just have to do, whatever you have to, in order to survive!

"Paying" them off or "laying" them off? lol
    ROMOS

    Redundant!
    Ducky

If they "pay off" and make it worthwhile, who cares about the Christmas bonus.
    ROMOS

Minimum wage, no redundancy money either, stupid contracts.

But......has to be call centers and has to be McDonald's....lowly I know but....$$$
    ROMOS

McDonalds in the UK prefer young teen workers, even lower than the minimum wage, you don't qualify for the minimum until you're 21.

No such thing in Canada that I know of. You'll make minimum wage whether you're a high school kid or a retired senior. McDonald's hires both. And call centers?
    ROMOS

Call centres hire & fire at will (target driven) and also zero hour contracts, the UK government are trying to make these contracts illegal, can't come soon enough.

What is a zero hour contract? Call centers do the same hire/fire thing here as well but most employees quit anyway....too stressful.
    ROMOS

A zero hour contract means you are not guaranteed a shift, you can turn up for work and they can send you home without pay, and you can't have a second job as you are tied to their contract 24/7.
    Ducky

Employers cannot do that here. If you show up for a scheduled shift and are sent home (for whatever reason) they must pay you for (I believe) 4 hours, by law. If you are only part-time and working another part-time job, you'll have to work things out with both employers. Logically, if you refuse too many shifts, due to your "other job", you'll be gone. When times are tough and if you're great at your job, most employers are co-operative.
    ROMOS

That's why our Govt are trying to make it illegal, but it seems they are struggling to do so for some reason.

    Business must be fighting it.

Call centers....Outbound = Sitting in a room with hundreds of others, calling you at home to sell you something (telemarketers) and Inbound = People calling in (unknowingly) to a center for some kind of service, i.e. roadside assistance, banking info, etc., usually thinking that they are speaking directly to the company. They may be speaking to someone in another part of the world i.e. India. I've worked at a call center and called/received calls exclusively into/from U.S.A.
    terryfossil 1

Sorry Duck,,yeah we have call centres here too,,most people just hang up on them.. however they have have nothing to do with employment...Always nice talking Duck..>>>><<<<<<
    Ducky

I don't understand. They have everything to do with employment. Call centers employ people to work at them. You sit in a call center and call people all day long. You get paid to do that. You would be surprised at the number of people who do NOT hang up on you and actually make a purchase over the telephone.

Crap? The job you mean? Sure is but for a while, it put food on my table and paid the rent. You do what ya' gotta do....
    terryfossil 1

Sorry Duck, i hope you never called,,because i would have hung up on you,,,SSSSSOOOOOOOO sorry.......
    Ducky

You say the same speech about 300 times a day. Who cares if you hang up. It's better than some of the alternatives.
    terryfossil 1

As you say Duck ..a jobs a job

For a while terry, I was a call center supervisor....had people crying on my shoulder/quitting almost every day because of things that were said to them. You need really thick skin to work at them. I'm glad that "career" didn't have to last too long. :)

If you find out, please let me know. Obama, in latest climate move, pledges $3 billion for global fund

    I second that.

A good attitude is a big plus.  Charm can keep one employed and sometime sought! Let your personality shine through on interviews. And heres a hint, if they give you a "walk around” and you see some trash, pick it up. This makes a good impression……………

I was offered a full time job, six months ago....age 72. Sometimes, it's just being in the right place at the right time, along with "who" you know. (I said thanks but no thanks but it was a compliment for sure.)

Were you offered a full time job shoveling snow? :)

No but those jobs are quite plentiful at this moment. :)

I know an 84 year old woman who still works at Sears, in spite of the young managers' attempts to get her to quit (i.e. poor hours, difficult assignments).  She is an incredible woman, with a lot of personal strength.

My aunt, also 84, has been hustling AVON and WATKINS products for years.  It keeps her socially active as well as professionally, but IS a self-employed operation, with the taxes and responsibilities, and no retirement or unemployment that can go with other jobs.  She also has to rely on customers to pay for their orders, as she must pay out of pocket before receiving them for distribution and receiving her check from Avon/Watkins.

A 74 year old friend has been a nanny for over 20 years; her "girl" is now a sophomore at a prestigious university.

You might look into becoming a real estate agent, although it is costly to start (membership fees, ads, business cards, etc.)

If you are where there is "AARP" (American Association of Retired Persons), you might contact their office and ask what services are available for employment.

Lots of us "old ladies" can be out there in the work force. :)

Depends on your training and experience. But, it you have none of either, you can always get a job cleaning, if you're well enough . A lady friend of mine is 66 and she still cleans.

At any rate, look on the internet and in your local paper for jobs.
