Fortunately, no. I have a friend who's home burned. She and her family always refer to their past as "before the fire". She says that the worse part of their experience (no one died or got injured), was the loss of personal effects such as photographs.

Yes, I guess the Phillipines are the worst ever!

We had an ice storm in the late nineties, I believe it was, when we went 12 days without power. Luckily, our wood stove kept us from moving out like many other families. January in Canada gets rather chilly.

Yup.The Halloween Nor'Easter that slammed many eastern states knocking out power to millions for a week or more. The entire state shut down. No businesses were open. No gas stations  no restaurants  no grocery stores and it got freezing cold. No electricity meant no heat/furnace. I had two small propane heaters that I bought just before the storm just in case the storm was as bad as they forecasters were calling for. I should have bought a generator instead. (I have one now). One propane heater went in the bird's room and the other one went in whichever room me and the dogs were in. The only heat we had was in a small circle around the small heater. I think the worse part of the week was no hot water for a shower, no hot food and no coffee. Strike that, the worse part of the week was NO COFFEE. 0.0 I now have a battery run coffee maker just in case we have another ordeal like that one. Survival makes you cope. I hated the week, it was long and boring and c o l d but we managed. There's always a worse disaster somewhere.

Or Japan and the Tsunami caused by the earthquake.

You had many people thinking about you and wondering just how you and yours would cope. It sounds terrible. TERRIBLE. When our electricity goes out for a few hours I get panicked.
When it goes out in the summer it is very scary. It's 105 degrees out and the house gets hotter and hotter and hotter like it's going to explode.
Japan and the Phillipinnes are beyond comprehension. (In Japan there was the added problem of THE NUCLEAR PLANT) Apparently items from Japan land on the northern coast of California. Refrigerators. Heavy things. Cars? I dunno. So bad. So sad.
I think the possible problem we're going to have is drought. It hasn't rained in forever here in CA. I feel guilty when I water our flowers and plants. We haven't been told to stop but that did happen years ago. We were in another town and all the lawns turned brown and plants died. How I'd love the rain....

yep,the flood we had in Brisbane Queensland,a lot of people died, and so many houses were washed away,,i lived up near the Wivenhoe dam,,we were locked in for a week, but we built our house on top of the hill,,house was safe...but what a lot of people dont know,,they had 5 gates open. only adding to the flood,,and the dam became the main reason for the flood damage,,the wivenhoe dam was built for flood mitigation ,,and they got it wrong and they walked free...and a lot of people payed the price................................................

How was the open gate problem kept from people. I'd think it would be world news. When did it happen?
Did you have enough supplies for the week that you were locked in.

I heard of a woman in the Santa Cruz, CA mountains. She lived on a hill and had a child daycare in her home. She was locked in for many days with a bunch of preschoolers and babies. I don't know the story but I wonder about Pampers and milk and baby food ...

We are pretty lucky in this part of the UK we don't get really bad disasters. We had a caravan recked by the winds in the 80's  and now and again a few trees blow down and fences get blown away, but these things are nothing compared to things we hear about in ather parts of the world.

I have never experienced this type of disaster but I sure think about those who are currently experiencing terrible life-taking problems. It seems like problems are all too much lately.

Oh, I almost forgot. In 1989 there was an earthquake in the Santa Cruz Area. The children in the daycare and I spent about half an hour under a low table. I got under there carrying a two year old. Afterward I didn't know how I could have done that. Under usual circumstances I couldn't have gotten under the table with the baby. It was like lifting the car off your dad ... kinda sorta.

No. We're in a little sheltered area here, b/c of the topography of the land. Knock on wood.

There was an earthquake in northern California back in the mid 1970's.  I was in transition from apartment to mobile home (trailer park).  The large bay window in the apartment shattered. The  trailer park was without electricity for about a week.  Most of our stuff had been moved already. I came home from work one evening to find my housemate/boyfriend, barbecuing everything that had defrosted...chicken, steak, burgers, pork chops... It was raining still and he was huddled on the excruciatingly small porch with the Weber, having a ball.

Our neighbors tree for the past 2 years has had huge branches fall onto our pool and created damage. Thank goodness for our insurance company subrogating to their insurance company. In the 70's there was an ice storm in CT. and our family had to move to my brothers' house in Mass. for a week.
