If I remember correctly the door was opened by a small servo motor that was connected to the door by a string cable. Either the string has broke or the servo has quit. I would bet the child scenario is the problem and the cable has broke or jumped the pulley assembly. It's a real bugger to restring that without the schematic to guide you. I had to attend a JVC training seminar just to cover that thing! Hated working on it! Anyway, the reason it's not seeing the CD's is that the sequence of events (switch trips) is not being done so as far as it's concerned the unit is not working right. (duh) No CD's. There is an onboard troubleshooting sequence for that unit but I do not have access to the schematics any longer so can't remember it. Sorry to be so vague. You may want to try a local repair shop to see if they will give you the codes. They may be in your manual too. With the price of CD players today to be honest, replace it. The life expectancy of the optics on that unit is about 1000 hours. My personal experience is less than that because the optics are suspended from the side and not in the natural form of setting horizontal.
