f you have a MID...the instructions are the same in the e38, e39, e46, e53 etc. BMW uses a similar design architecture across model designs etc. Just like the lights, IHKA panel, ASC/DSC/PDC buttons are all the same from 1995-up...so are the operation of the high MID. If you have Nav then that is different than the MID.
Off the top of my head...to change the time on the clock (if you have the MID)...press the clock face button until the TIME of day appears in the MID...then press the SET button (on the far right). This should give you a prompt display that allows you to change the hour/min etc with "+/-" buttons. Once you've entered the time you want...press the SET button again and that will save your changes.
For example...model year (and sometimes even model) doesn't really matter too much do to the same design architecture. In the image below, you can see the MID in my 99 540iT (e39 5 series) and my 97 e38 7 series. Other than the DATE being displayed instead of time...the HIGH MID's "display" is the exact same in my e38 & e39. You would press the clock face button to pull up the TIME (instead of the DATE)...then press the SET button to initiate changes...you'd do the same if you needed to change the DATE setting:
