Both gases are very similar, the market shifted to propane because butane ceases to produce vapour at about 40 degrees F. This meant that the tank in most North American and European climates would either have to be buried or have a pilot light to keep the tank  warm.

Propane continues to create vapour until about 40 degrees F making for a more stable and usable supply in more economical above ground installation without the hazard of lighting fire underneath it.
