I recently saw this film again after first seeing it about 30 years ago. It has occurred to me that it could never be made again today. Anyone know why?
All good answers, but the movie was made in 1972 before cellphones were introduced. Today all the guys in the canoes would have them and could call for assistance. No cover? No problem, at least one of them would have a satellite phone.

Even today when anyone plays that song on a banjo there is entire generation that starts laughing...for it's time it was quite progressive- in an odd way. It's a classic & couldn't be made any better. and Viny is right, they'd turn the rape scene into a love/sex scene and there would be a lot more blood.- See it just wouldn't work.

The summer of 2003 my kids were 16, 15, and 13. I borrowed a lot of movies from the library (for free) that were older so they could see some of the movies I'd seen in my younger days.
That fall, one of the eldest's teachers played music during class while the kids worked on assignments. One day he played "Dueling Banjos".
"I know that song!" exclaimed Andy. "No, you don't!" protested the teacher.
"Yes, I do," Andy insisted. "It's from the movie with the scary hicks."
(I would hope there would be no service in that area and those cell phones would be useless)
