It was a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, of which the poem was based upon part fact and fiction. However, I do believe there also was a ship by that name that sank in a different storm.

It was a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, about a Notheastern storm that ravaged the Maine coast in 1839, sinking 20 ships and killing 40 people. Although the poem was part fact and fiction, I do believe there was a ship by that name that sank, in a different storm than the one the poem was wrote about.
My mother used to use that same expression. Until today, I always thought that she was saying..."the wreck of the hespers" and I had no clue what that meant and never even thought about the meaning. I'm guessing that she was only repeating something that her mother used to say! So, let's all "Google it". :)
