People give up something for Lent,  something they enjoy, something they like or take  pleasure in,   and this self denial is a constant reminder of the meaning of the Holy Week.

I gave up sex but my wife didn't know it.  When she became romantic I had to tell her that ITS LENT.  She wanted to know who its lent to and for how long.

Lent also known as Cuaresma or Quadragesima (Latin: Forty[1]) is the Christian observance of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer – through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial.
