Synthesis is the act of making something, Some things grow, or are produced by narure - e.g., animals, plants, crystals. Others are made (by people, usually). Of that category, some are intentionally made to mimic certain qualities of the former, and it is to these that the word is usually attached - synthetic rubber, synthetic textiles, synthetic protein, synthetic rubies etc.

Hegel is responsible for the notion that progress in understanding is often derived from mutually opposed ideas being brought into direct conflict with each other. As their proponents argue it out, a new consensus emerges, containing the better elements of both. Thesis versus antithesis produces synthesis - preferably without bloodshed. I'm sceptical of this; though it may be applicable to practical politics, I doubt that it's often useful in the search for truth. Nor is its record good, as it seems to have given rise to both Lamarckian evolutionary theories, and Marxism, with its crude 'dialectical materialism'.
