Talk to someone in the field of what you are interested in doing! People who have the hands on experience of what you are focused on, will be of the most value in finding what you are looking for. But also, field experience is invaluable in many professions, as it is one thing to learn something in a classroom or lab, but a completely different thing to know what it is to deal with it in the real world! Good to know theory, but better to know theory and how to apply it to real situations that a person will face.
