I am planning to get a pet rat. I have had many other rodents but have a few questions...if the rat's teeth get too long will they need to be clipped? what is a good way to make my cat understand the rat is a part of the family? and finally were there any mafia nick named the rat & if so what was their real name?

Where are you planning on getting this rat from? If from a pet store, they should be able to answer your question about the teeth (though I think if you give it things to gnaw on, it's teeth should be fine). You should also pick up a book on proper care for your pet rat and have it vet checked.

You cat is either going to accept the rodent or not. I would keep them separate however. The rat knows the cat is his enemy. He will not understand that you just want them to be friends. He will be in extreme fear each time he's place anywhere around the cat. You can not get animals to reason like people do. I have birds, I would never get a cat because of that. I will not make my birds live in fear while they watch their natural predator roam around their cages.

Any one who ratted on mafia families would have been dubbed The Rat. There will be a lot of "the rats" I'm sure. Rat was used  in place of snitch.

Thanks Colleen...Interestingly enough My guinea pig and cat got along and i had two hamsters who, with supervision, hung with my cat (all in heaven) My current cat is curious, and of course supervision would be needed when the rat is out of his/her cage, and the cage would be at a safe distance from my cat. I have always wanted a rat & now seems to be the 'right' time. I do not believe in having any animal or human live in a state of fear. I have, and wouldn't wish it on anyone. Your sensitivity is appreciated!

Your cat is a good one then and probably will not give the rat reason to fear. Natural enemies in the wild have been know to become friends so it could work out the same for your cat and the rat you get. Good luck!

How about 'Pat the Rat' or 'Mickey Blue Eyes' Or Mr.Nitti?

Rats are very intelegent I would put the cat and the rat together and make sure that you are always to supervise this situation they will get on great I think they do need there teeth cut but the vet should tell you more about that its normally when they are given not the correct food ......I think the name could be Freddie the rat......

    Thak you Doolittle xx

Wasnt a mafia name(i dont think)but do you fancy the name Phoenix? My Phoenix was a beautiful glossy black. She was a bit of a hooligan though! When my son was young i remember her pinching his biscuit off him and making off under the settee with it!!He wasnt very pleased...

Let us know how you get on Doolittle!Rats? The smartest, cleanest, friendliest small pet you can get, youve made a good choice and ill need to know all about what theyve been up to but ill warn you ill be dead jealous and develop "I WANT THEM!!!!!!"SYNDROME!!

I will! Phoenix is a great name! Both to honor you hooligan..but also because I am "starting from scratch" due to major & unexpected life changes. I've always wanted a rat and now I can have one. (sort of like the myth of the phoenix)

What a lovely idea!We had rats years ago,my then cat never bothered them, remember once some had escaped and were running round the hallway,my cat just walked through them.he didnt bat an eyelid,i think to him they smelt of human.I wouldnt trust my present cat to be as good though!!Please be careful. We never had problems with their teeth either, make sure yours have something tough to chew.May i also suggest you get a pair?Male or female, not one of each!!!Good luck with them, youve made a good choice of pet. Please let us know how you get on

Thanks...I was thinking of two. Supervision will alsways be provided when the rat(s) are out of their cage...and because I have had many other rodents with cats at the same time I will make sure the rat(s) feel safe in their cage and the cage is secured so that my cat can't get into it!
