My eldest son, Andy, shares a December 9 birthday with you. He is 25 today (yesterday as I write), a quarter of a century old.
Andy was born 2 months prematurely and was hospitalized for the first month of his life. He was a chatty, witty, happy little kid, and was "bright" during elementary and junior high school years. Andy began piano lessons in 2nd grade and LIKED IT. He performed in studio recitals and adjudications, and "wowed" schoolmates at annual talent shows.
Andy also "studied" the trumpet in 5-6 grades. His band teacher encouraged him to switch to French Horn and tutored him. After two months (8 sessions), Andy auditioned for the Fresno-Madera County High School Honor Band and earned a chair in the FH section.
He was the kind of person who could walk into a room not knowing anyone, and when he left, everyone would know him by name and have a good word about him. He had a sense of humor, even as a child, that could put you in a fit of laughter. He could read people, and his assessments were nearly always right on.
Andy wasn't built for athletics, but played soccer through age 12. He had a good understanding of the strategy of the game; though he wasn't quick on his flat feet, when he had the ball, he knew what to do with it to be an asset to his team.
In late 8th grade, and through high school, Andy became increasingly deviant in his behavior. He was suspended from school, and even spent a semester at the continuation high school. As a senior, although he was back at the high school, he was not allowed to attend the prom, and he was very fortunate to participate in HS graduation. His former elementary classmates were all in the front row, most of them sharing in the valedictorian speech. When Andy's name was called to receive his diploma, that front row of students cheered so loud for him, it made me cry (even now).
Andy became a methamphetamine user and spent nearly $200,000 on "foolishness" and meth. When the money ran out (and it doesn't matter where it came from), he began stealing; eventually he got arrested. Facing prison, he was instead allowed to go to a rehabilitation facility for 28 days in-patient and 6 months out-patient treatment. (2007)
He was doing well, and met a woman through "friends" he'd made during his drug time. The two became involved and now have two daughters (2 and 1). Meth came back into his life and so did stealing. He was arrested again in July and has a 16-month term to serve.
He lost the house he rented from a real friend. When he moved, he sold or pawned everything he could, including things his brother had loaned him to enhance his home. He abandoned three dogs and left whatever else he thought had no value. Living at the home of his GF's parents did not work, as the girl's mother doesn't like the "white boy".
Andy hasn't contacted me since his arrest. I have always "been there" for Andy, but we are now estranged. Rumor has it he looks like a homeless person (which he is), and his GF burned all his clothes because SHE heard a rumor that he was riding around with another girl.
Yesterday was his birthday. I remember the day he was born like it was yesterday and could tell you stories about him that would have you laughing and loving him. I hope you had a birthday that you will remember as one of the best, 1967, and I pray Andy lives to see a birthday clean and sober.

You can always get a job cleaning or working in a nursing home. My step-grandson works in a nursing home,in the Cleveland area, adn he actually likes it.
